Bloggers: So What Part Of "Your Fly Is Open" Didn't You Understand?

So Battelle points to the WSJ article on slogs and Cuban screams profanities at G and the blogs gnash their teeth over the failure of the nofollow tag ...but this was all, repeat, ALL foretold almost from the day blogs hit the screen. One look at the built-in, easy-to-manipulate comment and trackback systems and some of the top spammers easily saw a money-printing machine.

These are not new issues, but they were (knowingly?) swept aside in the rush to publish. So now it's a mess that even the luddites can see. Can the blog "system" be redeemed?

Actually, I was reading somewhere that something like 5% of all blogs are spam. I don't see where that's too far off of any other type of site. I don't know what industry you work in, but in mine, 15% of the sites are easily spammy - either from an SEO, or all out crap content standpoint.

>5% - 15%

Yeah, in that WSJ article there's an inset stating that 2 to 8 percent are fake. I've seen other stats are more in range with the 15% figure. But creator-of-wordpress-Matt put out some pretty astonishing numbers in August. Let's put him on the high side (even though he oughta know).

Note the irony in his comment "Structured formats like RSS make this easier than before." --Substitute "blogs" for "RSS" and you have what the deep blacks said about blogger.

It's surprising that comment spam has received a great deal of attention but that spam blogs haven't caused much outrage yet. If you 've ever tried to search using Technorati, on many searches you have to wade through a bunch of spam blogs to find legitimate entries.

Yeah, it is at first glance. But comment spam makes a blogger do clean-up work on his own site while they can remain detached/passive about what's going on "out on the web." Well, detached until it starts to overwhelm them in their own categories.

automated splogs

saw this on slashdot....apparently last weekend blogger.com was hit by an automated spam blog creator that made thousands of blogs in a matter of days
