What's better for SEO: using a sub-domain or directory of a domain name?
Let's say your main American site is xxx.com
What would be better for the Australian site from an SEO perspective please? australia.xxx.com or xxx.com/australia Thanks. Last edited by AzamMarketing : 04-19-2012 at 09:15 AM.

Thanks. That would be the ideal situation. Unfortunately the restrictions on the .com.au for non-Australian companies means we have to use our .com

yeah I have some .au's but they get registered by my brother who lives there

To answer your original question, though, a subdirectory is by far better than a subdomain. A subdomain is seen as a "separate site", although it does inherit some of the domain value.
The subdirectory is preferred because it's on the main domain and gets the full value.
