finding the right keywords
My website is in position 2 with the keywords I expected users to type in to find my site. Those keywords however send very little traffic to the site so I am thinking that those aren`t popular keywords. We get lots of traffic from other keywords specific to individual pages but not on those keywords I expected to be the main search engine traffic contributor.
I have found tools that look at your website and suggest keywords, but they come back with the keywords I already aim for probably due to the fact the site has been coded up towards those. How do I find out exactly what people are typing in? I looked at competitors websites but they have very few keywords |

Re: finding the right keywords
If your targeted keywords shows high volume of users count through tools then you might need to work on the keywords position by geting relevent backlinks that points to the keywords targeted.
You can use these tools to get a view on related add-on keywords http://www.google.com/sktool/ https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal http://www.google.com/insights/search http://www.google.com/trends & Google Wonder wheel |

Re: finding the right keywords
@slippers:
To help you prevent another potential problem..... Have you tested if those keywords or any other keywords you receive traffic for convert into sales? (or ad clicks..however you try to monetize your site) If you dont take that into consideration, you might be here again in a few weeks saying you're getting traffic now but would like to know how to find keywords that actually send you business :-). Certain keywords (more targeted ones) might convert much better than others that send you lots of traffic. |

Re: finding the right keywords
if you want the terms that have the traffic look at what Google is suggesting in the drop down as you type your words - they are giving the most popular searched terms... also look at your site and see what terms are bringing most traffic and optimize for them

Re: finding the right keywords
you should also look at what converts - just getting traffic may not always be the answer - getting the RIGHT traffic usually is
