New Meta Tag for SEO?

I was wondering why the search engines have not yet introduced a new meta tag that targets negative keywords? If relevance is key, such a meta tag would stop your site from showing for totally irrelevant keywords e.g. the obvious example would be a negative keyword of "free" if your products cost something.

Any thoughts? Could this work or do SEO's just want to target absolutely everyone?

Re: New Meta Tag for SEO?

Nice idea, but to be honest I think SEOs would just want to target everything.

Also, just because your products cost something, it doesn't mean that people searching on "free x" wouldn't convert. If your products offered something that the free versions don't for example.

free is not acceptable in SE's I mean, nowadays they don't give importance to words such as free or best

Re: New Meta Tag for SEO?

Actually this is kind of brilliant. If SEs could come up with a way to give webmasters incentive to use it appropriately, this could generate more relevant results. You wouldn't want to spam it with keywords if that meant your site didn't show up for those keywords - so I don't think it would be a spammer magnet, they'd probably just ignore it.

So let's say you got a slight overall domain trust boost for using the meta tag sparingly and helping SEs show more relevant results. Definitely a lot of details to be worked out but a very interesting idea.

Re: New Meta Tag for SEO?

I agree the concept would help specific no listing for inappropriate terms etc. This is something the engines should be thinking about

Re: New Meta Tag for SEO?

rodhull, all SEO's do not target everything. There are some niche ones.

Yes it's time for search engine to have intelligent filters . I use minus(-) operator to avoid such words.

Best,

If you do a search for free "anything" you will see the word "free" highlighted on snippets in the results list. This means that they do still use it.

Don't get me wrong, I certainly think this could be useful in some situations. I just think that in the vast majority, even when SEOs are targeting niches, they'd be more than happy to rank for terms outside those niches, even if it's for products or services that they don't offer. Any chance of extra traffic is likely to be welcomed.

Upon the limit, so called extra traffic should not increase web page bounce rate. This will have consequences.

Re: New Meta Tag for SEO?

Irrelevant extra traffic - When a user don't find information in a page what he is looking for then he might close the page and move to the next site page(s). This may lead to more number of bounce rate %.

Bounce rate means a percentage of web site visitors who lands at a web site and leave the website without going to any deeper pages in a site.

Best,
