Why are search results from google so different from the others?

Why are google's search results so different from Bing, Yahoo etc?

Yes i know they're all different algorithms (although I thought Yahoo now used Googles search results?). But surely they are all striving for the the same thing so their results shouldn't be too different.

My business ranks number 1 or 2 for keywords which are qualified by my town e.g. <keyword> <town> in every search engine except google but shows no where in Google. Obviously from my perspective Google is wrong and teh others are right ;-)

I used to get similar results in Google but now my site is way down, like on page 10.

Why are Google's search results so different?

Do SEOs now have to choose between Google and the others when optimising?

Re: Why are search results from google so different from the others?

That is popular opinion but consider this:

I have a single page site, graphics and no text just a title and description tag, no inbound links - it is ranked number 1 on google for the term <local town> web designer.

My main site is a comprehensive 30 pager with over 200 inbound links for the term <local town> web designer and it is on results page 10.

And I am not the only example - I have time and time again seen sites at the top of google's results that have negligible content and no inbound links.

Google might intend inbound links to be all important but it certainly doesn't carry the weighting it claims.
