Should I buy a link in a directory? The directory is very relevant to my business and is targeted to only those companies that operate within the same market that I do.

I would buy the link - but as Google would ask is the payment for a human to check if valid site for the topic etc.
otherwise is the site likely to get you its own traffic

but yes I would buy a link from a relevant directory - do it all the time with Yahoo directory, BOTW and Business.com - they are noted centers of good relevant info

Do you want the link for traffic or for its link juice?

How much is it? Would the money be better spent elsewhere?

How is the site viewed by the search engines?

If you are concern with getting traffic and if you have budget to spend i would suggest to go for paid search as you will get relevant and enough traffic related to your product else decision is all yours
