Cached but doesn't appear in GOOGLE index/search results

The index page of my website plus many others are currently being cached by GOOGLE but are not included in the search results. About 8/9 weeks ago (Nov 4th 2005) the .com website (2,500 pages) completely disappeared from the GOOGLE search results and was replaced by a .co.uk domain which was merely pointing at the .com site (and always has been). We feared that GOOGLE mistakenly assumed it was a mirror site so we instantly put a 301 permanent redirect to the .com site and GOOGLE obeyed the request.
GOOGLE is still caching and crawling the .com but has yet to include it in the search results. Perhaps this is the way it deals with 301's and eventually starts to index them again -- we are stumped on this one! There shouldn't be any problems with the site as regards breaking the GOOGLE rules because it wouldn't have switched to the .co.uk site which, of course, has identical content to the .com! Maybe it is because it recognises a UK IP address and is influenced by the location of the UK server. The .co.uk site has many pages still showing up under site:www.mysillyoldwebsitesiteabcd.co.uk and are still showing up in the search results but are mostly supplemental.

The .com site has been established and indexed for over six years on GOOGLE with thousands of relevant inbound links, has a PR of 5 and is included in GOOGLE's own regional index which mirrors the DMOZ data. We are not connected to any link farms or dodgy sites and the entire website is generally devoted to local trades people and their products and services -- all pages are in html. The .com site is still listed on every other major search engine without any problems including DMOZ.
I contacted Danny and he suggested that I put the problem to forum members for their views. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
