Google Video To Gain Live Playback
The news is pretty big, Battellemedia broke the news on "Google To Launch Online Video Playback This Monday."

I've confirmed that Monday Google will launch an in-browser video playback feature based on the open source VLC media player. This is the logical next step for Google's video search and upload function, which began taking uploads from anyone who cared to submit back in April.
About 20 different search & marketing & technology blogs I track, already blogged on it. But this news was also slashdotted about 30 minutes ago.

John Battelle lists out four reasons why this is the "start of something big"
(1) "integrated with the Google payment program"
(2) "big deal for many institutions which do not have the ability to host and stream their own video"
(3) "shot across Microsoft's bow"
(4) "will help the spread of an alternative universe for video distribution and playback"

the download is annoying...
Why do I have to download a player? Where's the option to just download the video clip and use my own already-installed VLC player? Mac users are left out of this beta.

Is Google's player like Realplayer -- that is, disabled in functionality with streaming-only content?

This is not good, available at Google, Matrix Revolutions. John Battelle says, Now This Will Make The MPAA Happy.

I haven't been able to find any video that plays through Google. How am I to test this service without any video available.
