I appreciate the support. Open discussion is encouraged, but I just don't have time this week to reply to ethics threads. They are great but they can grow to 60 posts in less then a day. That is the main reason I am asking these threads to remain objective on the facts, only.
I have yet to discuss this with Tim. But I hope to have a scheduled meet with Tim, one on one, to discuss this and a few other questions I have. If not now, then over the phone next week. |

Did any of the SE reps mention buying high pr links as spam?

That'll make the price go up.

Just to clarify: I have never said it is okay to spam. I have said though that SEO practices do vary by industry. People are willing to take more risk in highly competitive categories.

what are chances someone will rank for for a big money term without buying links for SEO purposess, or some other "black hat" technique I'm sure it happens sometimes, but looking at the top 10 for any big term ... it doesn't seem to be that often |

I bolded something above on purpose above. Now, Tim had a slide on "industries" of some kind, which related to having to do or not do, certain SEO tactics to rank well. Tim did not say its OK to spam, as I said above in my original notes Quote:
But Tim does not like spam, he, Yahoo and all the engines are working hard to get spam out of their SERPs. In fact, it is Yahoo! leading the way with a new proposal at the indexing summit session. But Tim is honest about this stuff. He knows what is out there today and its a good thing. I have sent some tough questions for Tim to answer for me. It will have to go through the PR people, but I am sure it will help more. Again, I never said Tim specifically said in his presentation that, Yahoo! says it is OK to spam. I did imply, that he understands it, recognizes it, and somewhat tolerates it in specific industries. |

If RB isn't keeping back the tasty bits, this session seemed somewhat underwhelming...

I don't find it underwhelming at all - rather I think there's some very useful information. I've seen too many occurrences of people "accidentally" spamming without having any idea they were doing so. It's a very important topic, people need to be informed so they know what to look out for and what to avoid.

No argument there, just seems little came out that most of the membership here is not already familiar with... |

This was possibly the most entertaining session all week, even if it was not a massive amount of new information. Greg and Shari's head-shaking non-eye-contact making fight on the stage was great fun.
I appreciate Tim's relative honesty about the techniques, but knowing that, it was nice to hear about how easy it is to spot spammers in sectors where there aren't any - they "stand out like a sore thumb". I'm trying to put together all my notes to have full coverage of the sessions I attended by Monday. I'll let you know how it goes. BTW - Great to meet you Barry, and everyone else too. Rand, if you (or anyone else) would like to write up an article from your notes regarding any sessions you attended, I would love to run some in my High Rankings Advisor newsletter.
I'd want ones that you haven't already published somewhere else though, so keep that in mind. Thanks! |

I am also interested in anyone else's coverage on this topic. I wonder how they might have perceived Tim's speech as compared to my perceptions.
And Jill, if you want, you can quote passages from my coverage, if they are legible. |

without having been there and after reading Tim's response this is how, I interpret this: As long you have the the information on the page, some "spam" will not hurt you. Example: If you're selling shoes and have the word a few extra times on the page it's not a big deal. Now if you have britney spears typed and mispelled a few times on a poker site....

They also recommended having more than single word keywords. Running shoes, as opposed to shoes. And having some permutations of descriptions. (yes, I was there). And I was surprised to learn of the high importance of the page title, for SEO. I would never have suspected that, but it does make sense.
