I think we can get Yoast to help out here - after all - IMHO - he has produced the best one out there.

You ensure that you have custom permalinks turned on, and then you can just click on the link under your page heading and change it to whatever you like

The biggest problem in WordPress that I've seen is the generation of duplicate content. Many don't use the "more" tag on posts, for example, to split up the post so that the full post doesn't appear on the home page of the blog.

Your blog's home page gets crawled and indexed first--if the full blog post appears on the home page of your blog, then your blog post is a duplicate of what's on the home page of the blog. That lessens the chance that your actual blog post will rank well.

When it comes to listing posts, I prefer using WP's excerpt. It is good for SEO, plus capturing the user. Think of it as a teaser too. Screw that more tag, that is just lazy.

Home, or more properly, the Front Page should be more than posts like you said. Sure, there should be a list of some posts, but there should be major landing page links deep into the site. Plus you should make that front page, lean and mean, plus throw in a nifty Nivo Slider ... or at least a bigger header graphic.

There are things you can do without a plugin by revising the header. One thing is that the header wraps an H1 tag around the site-title, simple Php can shift that to the entry-title if it is not the home. The H1 should be the page title, not the site title.

Summarily, excerpts can be put into meta-description, tags into meta-keywords, and the list goes on ... all without a plugin. You are basically, duplicating both within WP and an SEO plugin. Crap, lets use WP and their edit screens to their fullest people.

All of that can be done with your theme functions, except maybe that canonical meta thingy that the Yoast plugin does so well. This will help reduce the number of duplicate pages and works well with most sitemap generating plugins.

Since everything of importance should be near the top of the page, I only have a problem with navigation menus. These should be minimal, and only point to major sections ... typically. Depends.

If you navigation is nested two or three levels deep, with tons of hard-coded links, I would suggest jQuery and hiding those links. Just keep your top-level sections readable to the bots. This is basic PageRank flow into the deeper sections, not only for Google ... but others as well, who are not that intelligent.
