Can broken image links lower Google ranking

Hello,
We have a site with product images linked from a different URL, last week for a bout 2 days we had a problem with the second URL and therefore the links to the image were broken.
It seems shortly after the Google ranking had been lowered quiet a bit.
Could it be as a result and if so is it temporary until Google's next visit?
Many thanks

Re: Can broken image links lower Google ranking

If it's just the broken links, then Google will correct the rank drop not too long after you fix the issue and they re-crawl your pages.

If it was some other factors, which might have been caught by an algorithm update then that could have a longer term effect.

broken links can do damage if there are too many of them or broken for too long.

Always have a practice to create a 404 error page and check web stat for the direction of error page.

As well you can see page not found in GWT and fix those ASAP. If fixes are done then you are safe with rank and listings.

Best,

Re: Can broken image links lower Google ranking

Thank you for the answers.
The site came back into the searches a couple of days after the links were fixed, pretty much where it was before but since it has droped again.
When fixing the links I had a full path URL, I changed the URL from an https version to a regular http version but for the same image, in other words, an image with a URL of https://secure.mysite.com/image.jpg is now http://www.mysite.com/image.jpg

Could this play a role in my current problem. Nothing else has been changed on the site, it still appears when searching the company name and appears on the map on some searches but on others where it was ranking well before it is nowhere to be found. It is not a very competitive area so I can't really understand why, any ideas?

Re: Can broken image links lower Google ranking

the difference is you need to 201 the https pages to the http pages - your links go to the old pages and there is now the possibility of duplicate content

Thank you for the tip but how can I put this in place for images?
I take it is now too late to go back to the https?
The site is on IIS

Re: Can broken image links lower Google ranking

Block the link(s) you like to get rid using robots.txt and GWT. Place your intelligence. G will refresh the index and crawl the correct one as you mention.

Re: Can broken image links lower Google ranking

in order to come back to previous ranking or so, would you recommend I keep the images on the https version and block the http or the other way around, considering that at first the site was using the https.
This change occured on the 19th of May

Re: Can broken image links lower Google ranking

Can I ask your opinion on what I have done in order to correct the possible problem of content duplication:

-1.)On the site displaying the images, I have added a robots.txt file with the following: Disallow: http://media.sitehostingimages.com/images/cmsv3/ , not sure if this will work as I have read absolute URL’s are not permitted
2.) on the site site hosting the images, I have registered the URL with Google webmater tools and added a robots.txt file, same as above, blocking all images in the folder
3.)I have insured that on the site displaying the images all links are via the https version

Does this make sense and is it possible that Google will eventually see the robots.txt for the https version of the image hosting site and will stop listing the images.
Is there anything else to be done on IIS to enforce the redirect?
