Infoseek to Google Founders: Go Pound Sand

It's always fun (and humbling) to reminisce about the eary days of the search industry. Remember when Excite stunned the world by announcing they had indexed 1.5 million web pages? And then when AltaVista trumped them, starting the search engine size wars by announcing a 16 million page index?

Another interesting blast from the past: Did you know that Google's founders shopped PageRank around before starting their own company? For a few million, the search engine titans of the day could have picked up great technology and, more importantly, nipped the future search king in the bud. It wasn't to be; Infoseek's Steve Kirsch even told Page and Brin to "go pound sand" when offered the opportunity to licence PageRank.

In today's SearchDay article, Search Memories, Mike Grehan reports on a panel at SES San Jose where former AltaVista, Excite and Infoseek veterans reminisced about the past, and talked about Google, then and now.

Comments welcome!
