Will submitting my site to free directories decrease my site's PR?

Good day!

I'm new here, someone who wish to learn and never stop learning.

My question is: Will submitting my site to free directories (with PR 0) decrease my site's PR? If it doesn't decrease, will it affect anything negatively?

I have a friend who submitted his site to free directories (I believe this is what we call having backlinks?) and after a while his site's PR dropped and when he stopped submitting, the site's PR went up. Anyone knows what could have caused this?

Generally, this act should not decrease PageRank. Unless you are doing something you shouldn't (such as getting involved in link farms) PageRank will not decrease for getting a link from a site with a lower PR than you.

Your friend's PageRank changes probably had more to do with changes at Google than with these directory submissions.

I agree with Sage. While submitting to directories will not hurt your PageRank, it may not help it either.

An additional item to consider is the rate and frequency at which you are submitting. If you have very few links and all of the sudden, you have a couple hundred links (all from directories) pointing to your site, then the search engines may be wary of inflated link development. It's best to mix directory submissions with other link building tactics.

Submitting your site to a few directories can be good for your site's back links, just don't overdo it. If you submit to too many directories in a short period of time, search engines might think you're a spammer and your PR will get punished.

No link can harm you - if it can, we could have already submitted our competitors site so it gets penalized, lols.. just kidding.

I suggest you also vary on your anchor texts as this will make your backlinks look more natural in the eyes of the SE's.

Some of you mentioned, "not all of a sudden" having a lot of links from directories, then my question is:

If I want to submit manually to link directories, what is the duration that I should do it so that it's not considered as "all of a sudden" by search engines.

It depends on where you're starting from. If you have very few links then go very slowly. If you have a lot already, then several directory links won't be a huge deal. Just keep in mind that it's best practice to keep your directories to only roughly 10% of all your incoming links.
