Are you a better SEO than Jason Calcanis?

Search Engine Strategies reformed Jason Calacanis. He used to be an SEO hater. Then SES taught him a lesson: SEO works. Now Jason's an SEO. For real.

Jason Calacanis: "...I'm One of the Best SEOs."

He's doing search engine optimization for a client while running his fast-growing "human search engine" Mahalo.

He's on Google page 1 for kw "los angeles dog trainer." How well did he optimize his client's site?

Oh, really? Kevin, was he *really* an SEO hater, or was that strategically orchestrated link bait?

Good point Marcia, any real high-end "SEO" should know the meaning of the words "anchor text".

So, in answer to your question "Are you a better SEO than Jason Calcanis?" I'd have to say yes.

Sorry but, I just couldn't resist!

Well, I don't know what he's done for the site SEO-wise other than throwing a link to it, probably good enough in itself to get a struggling site to the first page.

The market is not at all competitive, evinced by the #1 site: no backlinks in Yahoo Site Explorer coupled with 10-year-old, ahem, SEO writing. With the number of backlinks the doggiemanners site has and a bit of real work there's no reason it can't be #1 in a matter of weeks.

Re: Are you a better SEO than Jason Calcanis?

Let's take a look at the link profile at Yahoo SiteExplorer

That kind of opens a whole can of worms, doesn't it?

hmmm... aren't some of those paid links passing PageRank?

This kinda makes me wonder how many sites Larry and Sergey have optimized in their free time!

Re: Are you a better SEO than Jason Calcanis?

So the trainer gets page one results and a personal reference from a fairly heavy hitter. A can of worms I would probably open again and again.

Jason is one of the most brilliant PR flacks the internet has seen in a long time, he has made a career out of visibility.

Actually reminds me a little of Ted Turner around the height of CNN.

I also think that for sure he is way too coy when it comes to lack of knowledge about SEO.

You really think, its a big keyword??

I am even confused - he is on Google page 1 for the client's keyword, why not client's website?

Re: Are you a better SEO than Jason Calcanis?

There are two sets of results rotating; one of them is fine and the other is atrocious. Check periodically, different data sets will come up that are really an eye opener.

los angeles dog groomer

What you want to see is the search result with the map showing. Amazing!

Re: Are you a better SEO than Jason Calcanis?

Man, all I have to say, is until Calacanis can rank for Poker, Viagra, or something with travel, he's just spewing hot air.

Heck he can't even get Mahalo to rank for Search Engine in Google .... dog tainer in los angeles ... yeah how many searches is that a year? likely less than 500!

And yes send me questions! searchmarketinggurus -a-t- gmail DOT com

oh and they don't have to be annonymous - only if you want it to be, stipulate that in the email, but to date, everyone's taking credit for their questions .. and there's some great ones so far!

Re: Are you a better SEO than Jason Calcanis?

Very funny, Li. So does that mean you want Kevin Ryan to ask Jason about Viagara? :-)

The question I'd ask: Can your dog trainer rank for "dog whisperer?" #1 for "cesar milan?"

Or is Jason the guy running the "Training Your Pet To Do SEO" panel at SES NY?

Should be some good material for legitimate questions to ask here:

Valid topic area for conversation about start-ups, always an interesting subject.
