How to rank images in Google

Does anyone have any experience on how to rank images in Google?

I have a site with many free pictures for web use and want Google to not them and display at the top of their image search for the terms. I have an alt, and title and nice url.

Anybody know how this works? They also fit in with the content of my page. view this page as an example www. africapic.com/pictures_of_snakes_spiders_reptiles.html

Help would be most appreciated!

Alex

Re: How to rank images in Google

Here is a quick checklist of 5 things you can do to help increase your rankings in Google Images:
  • 1 Use keywords in your image alt tags.
2 Use keywords in your image filenames.
3 Use keywords in the surrounding page text. Relevant keywords in the 10 or so words before and after an image are especially effective.
4 Optimize the overall page for that keyword. Be sure to place the keyword in the page title, header tags, and inbound links.
5 Use keywords in the image title tags. (This is something that may only help a little bit but will never hurt your efforts.)

Having images only in a folder called images, photos or similar also seems to help.

Re: How to rank images in Google

Hi All

I have:
1) added alt tags
2) added Title tags
3) can't put name in URL though
4) have page optimised for the image name

here is an example
www. africapic.com/pictures-of-cheetah-stock-photography-photos-5624.html

Not sure what more I can do?!!!

How does imagelabeller work on Google...you get random images but not yours to label!

Alex

Re: How to rank images in Google

I think that I have followed the outlines you provided...

The only thing I can't change is the filename...these are predetermined. Below is a page that is an example.

Can you tell me if this image is optimised?

www (dot) africapic.com/pictures-of-cheetah-stock-photography-photos-5606.html

Thanks

Alex

You have missed the follow steps for image optimization.

1)Not using keywords in your img file name.
2)You don't have supporting keywords rich contents on image pages.

Will it not keywords stuffing?

Pic size is more important as well as the amount of text that goes with the pics. Optimize the sizes of your pics and remember the web can only show them at a certain level.

Re: How to rank images in Google

What are your thoughts of this page?

Would you say that it is image optimised for the word "Pictures of Lions"
www(dot)africapic.com/pictures_of_lions.html

I think that the pics are a good size to be indexed by Google.

Thanks ?

Re: How to rank images in Google

Does Google prefer the word pictures or photos in a filename?

i.e. africapic.com/pictures/lions
or africapic.com/photos/lions

Any thoughts?

How much does this help?

It would be a LOT of work for me to rename some folders to do this. Just wondering if it is worth it?

Also, would you use the folder name images, or photos, or pictures???

Re: How to rank images in Google

I have opted in to enhanced image search in the tools. Thanks for the tip though. :-)

What are your thoughts on my filename quandary? I have had the suggestion of images? I was thinking of "pictures"? Does anyone have an objection to this?
