Wikia to launch search engine soon?

Wikia has been making more search engine noises. Jimbo Wales spoke at the Commonwealth Club last night, and hinted that some announcement regarding Wikia search is coming at the open source conference in late July.

Wikia is supposedly doing "human powered search". Not yet clear how this will work, but it will be something like Wikipedia.

Re: Wikia to launch search engine soon?

Not launching a search engine yet, but they did buy the Grub crawler from LookSmart, and release it under an open source license: Search Wikia Launches Open Source, Distributed Crawler.

They're hoping users will download the client to run either as a screensaver or as a background application.

faroo.com goes even a step further: distributed crawling and distributed search.

Isn't Mahalo going to kill all the other engines? If Jason says it's so, it must be true right?!

Re: Wikia to launch search engine soon?

Threadwatcher has some more news on the subject, I find the idea of using people's computers to process indexing and ranking tasks a very interesting concept.

It's a fascinating concept!

Do you think Google was looking into the idea of "distributed search" with "Google Compute" a few years ago?

Google is still one of Folding at Home's (distributed computing) top ranked teams and listed as a supporter:

I've often wondered why they just stopped pursuing "distributed search".
