Number indexed pages dropping - What to do?
Over the past 3 weeks, the number of indexed pages for my site on Google has slowly dropped. It started above 3000 and is now at 2830. It's a large site full of good content. What's likely to be the cause - and more important - what can I do?

First of all what you call good content Google may differ on. Secondly the only sure way to keep pages indexed is to have backlinks pointing to them. If it is good content it shouldn't be that hard to get some good links to those pages. This will keep them indexed.

*What's likely to be the cause*
Could be external (link "juice" devalued) or internal (duplicate content/generic description/ titles), but without the Url.... |

The URL is www.bookthink.com
I'm working on redoing the metacoding, especially on the home pages of each issue (we are up to #88). In the earlier issues, the site home page was moved to be that issue's home page the next week without redoing the meta tags. That means that the meta coding was identical on all the early issue home pages except for the issue number. I'm redoing those and making sure each of the 800+ total pages have the right metacoding. But this takes time. Should I concentrate on getting the issue home pages re-metacoded or something else? Is there a problem redoing/reloading too many pages too quickly? I don't want to make this worse! Last edited by Marcia : 06-04-2007 at 11:20 PM. Reason: Delinked URL |

G shows me 2930 pages indexed, seems to be just your forum pages that are supplemental, they all use the same generic description so it could be that...

Different data centers have different indexes and there are fluctuations in results all the time don't stress! Make content and be sure your site complies with Google's webmaster guidelines.

Thanks for your help!
Glengara, how do you tell which pages are supplemental? And is there anything I can do to make Forums more indexed on Google? |

site:www.bookthink.com will show 1000 pages with supplementals starting around 750 IIRC, try giving them individual descriptions and see what happens...

Glengara -
Would you give me a clue how to get started giving forum items individual descriptions? Is that a metacoding thing or a internal or a forum thing? I'd love to get more milage out of them. writer Last edited by writer : 02-28-2007 at 05:05 PM. |

Google Dropping Pages
Yes, Google is dropping pages. Drastically. However, even those with backlinks are being dropped. I am sure they consider it duplicate content. So I am redesigning my pages so it is not duplicate.

I've noticed that my indexed pages can flucuate as I add to and modify the shopping cart. It usually settles in at around 5800 so I don't give it much thought if it drops - as long as it's during a time that I'm doing some major overhauling.

Some of my pages are coming up supplemental... any other suggestions on how to get them out of there?
