We started the development of online pet portal.

We have already made the rating of pet’s pictures and forums. Anyone can vote on picture submissions and post questions in PetonWeb forums.

Do you think such a community will help in promotion of our online store selling pet supplies and medications?

Sure it might work if you have a good viral marketing strategy in place. My advice will be to start with pet blogs and forums with banner ads. If you use AdWords you can target such sites with relative ease- but it might get a little expensive.

A bolder strategy will be to do away with the registration completely at least for a few weeks and see if there is a dramatic difference. I would also add "send this to a friend" link for the rating.
