Proof One of Australia's Leading IT Companies is Spamming

I was in touch with an old client of ours the other day who was after a critique of why their website was not performing so well on the search engines. After doing some research, I noticed they had a micro-site created for them by one of Australia's most widely recognised publicly listed IT companies.

{The company in question} has contacted some of our clients in the past offering them an SEO technique with "a unique & proven methodology to deliver ranking success". Upon reviewing their actual service in more detail, they are nothing more than selling them multiple domain names, each to display a micro-site linking back to the main website.

Having read about Microsites at a number of different reputable resources (including www.highrankings.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=11720), I am somewhat disgusted that an Australian company with such an influence on uneducated Australian business owners is using a technique that is considered spam by the search engines.

The company is a leader in domain name registration in Australia, and has a strong presence in New Zealand, Asia and worldwide.

This ought to be brought to the attention of the Australian business community as they are doing a dis-service to Australian companies by misleading them with techniques which will ultimately see their websites penalized by search engines.

I would be interested to hear everyone's comments on this.

Is there a connection between the doorway page/site and them not ranking well?

It's hard to say. I wouldn't expect a single micro-site to pull a website down drastically unless these micro-sites made up a significant portion of their inbound links. Regardless, from what I've read it is a technique that isn't accepted by the search engines, and therefore the Australian company is doing the entire business community a big dis-service.

I have in fact come across an email in June 2005 from a business partner who forwarded me information on the company's SEO services for my opinion. Now that I re-read this email, they are blantantly charging clients for every micro-site they create.
