301 Redirect advice needed

I've set up 301 redirects for new pages but the Google site map contains the new pages not the old ones so am I likely to end up with the same page indexed twice? E.g. page1.html redirects to page1.asp and the site map contains page1.asp and does not contain page1.html

What will I see in the SERPS when Google updates the page with a redirect on? E.g. Currently I see page1.html in the SERPS, will this change to page1.asp when it's been updated?

Many thanks

Re: 301 Redirect advice needed

It can take anyhing from one week to a number of months for Google to update the SERP's with the new URL's. In my experience, it has always happened sooner rather than later.

As long as your 301 redirect has been implemented correctly, then you are advising any robot that visits that page that is has moved permanently to a new place. Therefore, the next time the same robot visits, it should go straight to the new place.

Google is far better at this than Yahoo! and MSN though.

Re: 301 Redirect advice needed

as soon as you have the 301 in reality there is only one destination and the new page is the winner... Google will eveventually move results to those pages but in the mean time they are ok

you'll get benefits shortly from google because we've used this 301 redirection techniques in old urls and we've archived these new urls in 2 weeks.

so hopefull you'll get your new links in google soonest

thanks
