Smile Keyword Domain Vs. Brand Domain – Strategy?

Hello All,

I was thinking about a possible “strategy” and was looking for your opinions.

What if it was possible to get a domain with a keyword I want to rank for; let’s use “Blue-Widgets.com” as an example. Now let’s say I have gotten 30 links from random sites to “Blue-Widgets.com” and pretend this was enough to get me into the top 10 for the search term “Blue Widgets”. Now that I’ve got a decent ranking and 30 sites linking to me with the product name as the anchor/keyword text, I now want to take advantage of the my company’s brand - which we will say is "BrandCo". Lets say we have BrandCo.com registered.

Now that my site ‘Blue-Widgets.com’ is ranking decently – Can I use a 301 Re-direct for Blue-Widgets.com to hit BrandCo.com? Keeping my incoming keyword anchored links and top 10 ranking while taking advantage of my Brand? Instead of showing Blue-Widgets.com all the time?

If so, how would I make this work?
When a user visits my site either from an old ‘Blue-Widgets.com’ link or direct from my business card, I would want them to see ‘BrandCo.com’ only.

Any Advice/Thoughts? – Thanks In Advance.

Short term it will work but the power o the domain name will be lost eventually IMHO - good question - may want to ask Matt Cutts

i have done this for one of my website.......gradually u'll loose the ranking for the keyword domain. I started link building for the new domain and it has come up on its own merit though the site is still redirected.

Re: Keyword Domain Vs. Brand Domain – Strategy?

Hey Sunny,
A good question by you.
I would like to say it definitely works.
I am targeting seo business in tampa bay area.
We have domain name SEOtampabay.com
I team had done link building for this website till it got PR 1 (about 2 months) than i suddenly move to my brand and redirected it to
rapidvectorseo.com
Hence i didn't feel any changes in my website ranking for this particular keyword, even i got sitelinks for this keyword also
you can search in Google for
SEO Tampa Bay or Tampa Bay SEO
You'll find my site at 1# with sitelinks.
From my personal experience it'll definitely works.
The same thing i did before a year ago for our client site, and currently that site ranks in Google first page for very generic keyword like Shed or sheds
I'd recommend to do that...
John...

that's a good way to go... redirects are the bedrock of keeping the web organized
