Low Volume Keywords

I could have swore I read something, early last year, on the Official Adwords Blog that they were not doing this anymore:

No
The keyword phrase you've entered has a low search volume and isn't showing any of your ads.

Am I mistaken? Does anyone else remember this?

I think it is pretty frustrating and really takes value away from advertising on Adwords.

kg84-

low click rate/low volume. And in these instances Google likes you to keep upbidding through to the moon even if there are no other ads showing on the page.

Re: Low Volume Keywords

Not exactly....that means that google doesn't believe their to be enough traffic to justify bothering their servers.

I don't believe any amount will trigger your ads. Basically google is saying "Go Fish"

Re: Low Volume Keywords

Ryan L-
I don't see any "Go Fish" indicators from Adwords I just see Adwords keep asking for more money to show the ad. I haven't heard of any problems with Google servers not showing ads with potential to earn some $. The keywords in question are single word, broadmatch, geographic - small towns near a business location. I am happy with the only ad in Adwords and a low click through rate for these.

Re: Low Volume Keywords

I realize that and it frustrates me as well, but Google has to limit keywords (data centers aint cheap)and manage expectations.

I don't think that its a greed thing rather..they simply don't believe that the 7 people seaching for "Red Triple E width Clown Shoes" in Stockbridge per year are going to be a good return for their advertiser (you).

No matter how much you bid there are certain keywords that will not show because of their search volume.

There is some info in the AdWords Help Center about this, and I have excerpted it below (with a bit of bolding added by me) quoting from this page:

What are 'low-traffic keywords'?
http://adwords.google.com/support/bi...n&answer=36558

Quote:
[...] Keeping these keywords out of the ad auction helps AdWords serve ads more efficiently and reduces the volume of keywords on our system. Before stopping a keyword from joining the auction, our system evaluates the number of searches on a given keyword worldwide over the past twelve months. It takes very little search traffic for a keyword to be unsuspended , and for business practice reasons we don't disclose our keyword traffic thresholds.

This state is only temporary, and these keywords will be reactivated automatically if we find that they could start delivering traffic. Therefore, they'll always appear as 'Active' within your account. It will take one to two days for a keyword to begin receiving impressions again once our system sees searches occur for the keyword. [...]
It amounts to not using up computing resources supporting keywords that get no traffic in a system in which hundreds of millions searches are done every day. Having a pretty good overview of what goes on it is clear to me that with many tens of thousands of advertisers what might be called minimally useful keywords can, and do, add up rather quickly.

Re: Low Volume Keywords

They’re relevant to your brand, but the engines might say otherwise. Seems like an unnecessary obstacle to any search campaign. Let’s say you’re a national brand with local offices; and given this tough economy, you still have goals for growth.

Re: Low Volume Keywords

AWR -

I accept your explanation on low volume keywords. However, you did not address the phenomenon of requiring upbidding to the moon for these low CTR ads (while none or very few ads show).

A potential workaround is a separate campaign based on the keyword in question and using extensive negative keywords to bring up the CTR. Lot of work!
