Hi Phoenix,

There is nothing about SEO as a career that makes it "safer" than other careers. If you are prepared to do a lot of meticulous hard work, you'll be fine but the first thing most SEOs will tell you is there are no guarantees.

As with most fields, a small business that is well run and managed can make good money but it is a very competitive sector. People who enter the SEO sector as sole-practitioners without sufficient experience or knowledge can do more harm than good and are often quickly outed by the rest of the community.

By far the safest career path is to start with an established firm and take time to learn what they do. You'll likely start in keyword research and minor link-building. When you have a handle on what you're doing, start writing about the experience to your company blog and share information with others in the sector. In doing that, you work towards becoming a known name.

Once you are a known name, you can feel a bit safer however nobody in this industry is immune to reality. The economy sucks right now. That's real. Large and established firms should be OK but there is likely going to be contrition amongst the smaller firms and single operators.

I'm sorry this is not the most optimistic answer but I am just reacting to the way the question was phrased. If I was you, I wouldn't bother seeking safety. I'd seek inspiration.

IMO a good suggestion is to master the two skills to be more safer on this chosen field
