Google changed our rankings
Hi
In the span of 2 days, our ranks dropped from 19 to 32 for a particular keyword, we are still wondering how/why. Let me give you some idea of what we did and what we changed in those 2 days. (I am not able to attach the graphical chart for reference in this post). I am using our website rank monitoring tool - http://kpmrs.com to track my search engine rankings. I took the screen shot from that only. So anyway until 07/04 - we did nothing to optimize kpmrs.com for the keyword "website ranking" but still it was doing going up as you see in the chart. It was not in top 100 few weeks ago but on 4th July, it reached its peak - 19th on google . On the same day, we changed our titles and some content. We added "website ranking" in the title, we added the same keyword in the description of our home page content and in meta keywords. As soon as we did that, our ranks fell . It is kind of weird. I have no clue why would the rank drop suddenly for the keyword which we added in title and content. Can anyone suggest a practical reason ? Thanks V |

Re: Google changed our rankings
how heavily did you add the term throughout the page?

Re: Google changed our rankings
Most of them do this mistake when they see a listing for one of their keyword in 2nd or 3rd page. They try to increase density in tags thinking that it will bring to 1st page. It won't work for all domains. Instead you should have tried building quality backlinks for the keyword then you should have got into the game.
Okay now you may check out the keyword density in tags comparing with your top competitors and have the key phrases in the content part meaningful and build some inlinks and wait for results Best, Last edited by jag : 07-08-2009 at 04:55 AM. Reason: typo ;) |

Re: Google changed our rankings
Google is constantly tweaking their algorithm. And many factors outside your control. One of our top keywords has TWICE dropped out of the top 50 in the last four weeks, only to slowly climb back to where it was before.

Re: Google changed our rankings
Very true Jag, As Google has recently made some changes in its ranking algorithm and according to its new algorithm it no more looks for keyword density on the page rather it looks for the synonyms of your keywords on the page to check the relevancy of your content on the page so never try to repeat your keywords on the page to increase density of your keywords on the page Even try to write genuine content for your visitors not for the Google crawlers.

Re: Google changed our rankings
The ranking changes you see are rather normal for a new or newer site or for a site that just starts with some seo work. If your seo campaign is solid, over time, you will see the rankings become stable. Nothing to worry about at this time.

Re: Google changed our rankings
SO remember too, that time is a factor. You always take a chance to tweak something once it is doing well. If you change something and it is seen as too big a change, you can cause yourself to move down a bit before it will start to climb back up. There's a certain amount of "it ain't broke..." once you are doing well for something... This is where you're usually better off working on your inbound links, like JAG was saying.
