Moving Domain

Recently I have moved my website to a new domain. I followed Google’s advice http://googlewebmastercentral.blogsp...your-site.html set up individual 301 redirects and have kept both sites in Google webmaster tools.

The issue I have is that 4 weeks on both domains are now ranking for my brand name, even though the old domain just redirects to the new one. My question is how long does it normally take for Google to drop a 301 redirected domain out of the index? And should I consider removing the old domain from the index using Google webmaster tools?

Thanks in advance for your help.

G.

Re: Moving Domain

Google's usually pretty good at 301s when a domain is moved, dropping the old one fairly quickly.

If you haven't already done so, the first thing I would do is to use a tool such as Live HTTP Headers for Firefox to check that the 301 redirect is actually being served.

Then check the crawl status, errors, etc., for both domains in your Webmaster Tools account to see if you can sniff anything out.

If everything checks out it might just be a matter of waiting a bit longer, but do check in here again if you find anything or have other questions.

Thanks for this Jim, I will take a look at Live Http Headers for FF.

It's also woerth checking out Fiddler. I found it invaluable when performing the same operation.

By the sounds of your symptoms, I would guess that not all pages on your old domain have been redirected to the new site. This can also occur if the 301 redirect is done globally rather than across individual pages.
