Google Indexed pages fluxuating wildly
I have been logging my new site since it launched. The pages indexed by google (site:mysite.com not the webmaster count) has been fluxuating. It started out with a decent # 5-7,000. Since then it has dropped to 5,000 / 3,000 / back to 5,500 / and now it is at 3,000. This has all happened in a matter of a couple of weeks. What causes this? My bounce rate is less than 2% now for over 2 months.

Re: Google Indexed pages fluxuating wildly
Yes (sort of). Of the 90,000 pages I still need to edit the meta's of about 1800 links. My site structure basically goes home>level 1> level 2> level 3> product. Those 1800 meta's are all at level 3. There are approximately 2,400 at that level that have been completed.

Re: Google Indexed pages fluxuating wildly
Why don't you code for dynamic title's and Meta tags that can be taken from products / services names? And latter you can edit.

Re: Google Indexed pages fluxuating wildly
I have which is why the majority of the 90,000 pages have been done. However, the aspdotnet cart I am using does not allow for this at the higher levels. These have to be edited by hand.

Re: Google Indexed pages fluxuating wildly
are there content pages that are largely the same except for some minor text changes - or exact due to how you get to the pages?

Quote:
All of the meta's described above are at the item landing page level, and are generated based off of product attributes. The higher category level meta's are the ones I have to create by hand. These would be something like this: category: widgets. Then, it would break down widgets into their unique subcategories then the item landing pages would be in these. The subcategories would all have a reference to the higher widget category so that would be similar, but again this is only because it is relevant. Ok, long explanation that I hope made sense. Short answer everything is unique with some repetitive words per category simply based off of relevance. I still don't see why any of this would cause google to start reducing my page count. |

Re: Google Indexed pages fluxuating wildly
There can be more than one reasons for it and from the coding section to the SEO for the website anything can be responsible for it.

Re: Google Indexed pages fluxuating wildly
Hmmm. A little ambiguous. Any resources you could recommend on where to start looking, or could someone list possible causes to look in to?

cant specify any particular resource as we dont know the exact section where the problem really is.

Could someone list the areas/issues I need to examine further in order to pinpoint the problem?

Re: Google Indexed pages fluxuating wildly
Has anyone written articles about the issues involved here on SEW? I can't find anything.

Re: Google Indexed pages fluxuating wildly
Would this be caused by the robot.txt file being redirecting robots to a sub folder to read?

Re: Google Indexed pages fluxuating wildly
you should not be doing redirects in or to the robots.txt file
