Does 301 redirect = Cname redirect?

Ok. I understand the need to point www.mysite.com to mysite.com. What I cannot understand is how. I do not have access to the server webconfigs. I have to do this via 301 redirect.

My site is hosted on a server and the real site name is mysitehost.com. I tell godaddy to point mysite.com at that site. Here is my confusion. Is a CName redirect the same thing as 301 redirect? I cannot purchase www.mysite.com only mysite.com. Godaddy only offers the ability to 301 redirect mysite.com to the host server. It does offer the ability to cname www. version to the host server. Does this take care of things?

do you see a .htaccess file on your server? can you ask your hosting company if you can edit or add one?

Host just upgraded us to a new server. I can see the .htaccess file but it shows nothing when I click on it. Seems like it is a server side only edit. I was told before I couldn't access it, and I am one of the first customers to be upgraded to this server so they probably just haven't hidden it yet.

I'll ask about it again. This is all a bit above my head. I'm just an owner not a techie. I would hope with their reputation that my host company would take all the proper security measures, but who knows.
