Page Rank Sculpting?
Hey guys
Google has recently made changes in its algorithm which is 'No More Page Rank Sculpting'. Means balancing the page rank of your internal site links using Nofollow is the bad practice Now but I am still not clear with this change in algorithm. Can anyone explain it widely to understand it better. so that I can go about my site linking strategy(inbound and outbound) accordingly. Thanks in advance! |

Re: Page Rank Sculpting?
PR Sculpting is all about site link shape architecture that propose to allow link juice flow and it was counted even early years and link nofollow attribute is one of the factor we have the control. You can find a definition in my blog and where all it matters. I would be writing an article how it works with some hidden factors behind those based on my observation

Re: Page Rank Sculpting?
Seems like a hot topic lately. You can still do PR sculpting the old fashioned way by using scripted links in place of the nofollows. Just make sure the script itself is off page and robots blocked.

Re: Page Rank Sculpting?
Google wants you to sculpt with your site architecture, not by an artificial means. Now that google can see links in simple javascript, you can't use javascript to hide links either. So pagerank sculpting is still a good thing to consider (according to Google). Just harder to manage.
Plus, they changed their algorithm last year according to Matt Cutts. No follows haven't scuplted pagerank for a while. It's only prohibited the flow to places where the no follow has been used. It didn't add the extra pagerank juice to the remaining links. |

Sure you can. You just have to hide the javascript ;-) |

Re: Page Rank Sculpting?
ChiefLee, we can do Page Rank Sculpting in opposite direction
![]() Just have your unwanted links or non-priority pages for SERP's in an external include file may be in js, html, xml or what ever it is and have those external include files blocked with your robots.txt Best, |

Re: Page Rank Sculpting?
One thing that hasn't been stated explicitly in this thread is that the Pagerank will be divided among all the links on a page, even the ones with rel=nofollow. The initial appeal of Pagerank sculpting was the idea that you might be able to flow MORE Pagerank to certain pages, by rel=nofollowing links to other pages you did not care to empower. But that's not the case. If we consider that the Pagerank of a homepage, for example, has a value equal to 100%, then the Pagerank flowing to any individual page linked to from the home page would be expressed as 100%/# of links on the page. But, since rel-nofollowed links are counted, the PR that flows to any of the non-nofollowed pages is diminished. As an example, let's say that you have 10 links on a page and 5 of them are nofollowed. You would expect that each of the pages would receive about 20% of the PR, but they actually only get 10%.

Re: Page Rank Sculpting?
Example as Matt explained and confused. But many don’t care about this now
![]() I just drop non-value links in external file and block with robots since I don’t want these pages to be ranked and the pages would be only for user’s clicks and conversion. These things can be planned when you design site architecture and you can have the control and decide which page has to be ranked and which need not. So no worries of page rank wastage or sharing without control which snatches many people sleep ![]() |
