How Do You Approach Other Webmasters to Request A Link?

Howdy All,

For discussion - & its possible this topic is discussed under another thread.

When you are link building, and find a resourceful page on the net with relevant content to yours (and a decent page rank), how do you go about requesting a link?

Do you send a simple email saying "Hey nice site, would you link to mine?". Do you try to engage in content related conversation first? Or do you use some other means? Is there a process that works best?

This question is simply out there to start a discussion and find out how "SEO'ers" are reaching out to other webmasters for a link request - what kind of conversations take place?

We use the contact form on the website. Although we use a template, we make it quite specific to that site, to stop it looking like a mass email or an automated request.

It's important to get to the point quickly, and be specific about the advantages and precise details of what you want.

i tell them that i am asking for a link since i found them creditable (n thats true, only if i find a website creditable i ask), i also mention that we can proceed if they also find my link beneficial for their business. If they feel its appropriate they give, else i move on.
