Optimising websites for small businesses

SEO is generally considered for large websites but we don't talk much about small ones for businesses such as plumbers, hairdressers etc.
What is the best way to approach this in order to get some traffic and most of all to generate some business bearing in mind the budget for investment in link building will be very limited.

get a free business profile in Google Business and start appearing in your neighborhood maps when people search for your business type.

SEO can be just as or even more important for smaller businesses. As suggested above use Google business but the website should also be optimised using the same tools and techniques that you would use on a large site.

I don't think SEO is for big businesses only, you can do it for you own blog as well if you aspire to make money from it. Most of the SEO tools are resources are free and hence there is nothing to worry about.
