Are sub-domains considered internal or external links

I have 2 questions:
1) Are sub-domains considered internal or external links?
2) I have a lot of sub-domains (over 1000) with a link back to the main site. Google has finally recognized these backlinks & my backlink count in google has increased. But i read somewhere that google doesn't like too many backlinks from sites with same IP. Are these backlinks from my sub-domains going to be an issue in the long run?

one link per site... but thousands from the same IP will sooner or later get you dropped - or at least the links will be dropped

Re: Are sub-domains considered internal or external links

1,000s of subdomains? Are you Blogger or Microsoft?

All jokes aside, if you are doing this purely for SEO reasons, then whatever advice people give you, Google will think you're spamming it.

To answer your questions:

1. Usually Google thinks of subdomains as different sites altogether.

2. This page will answer your questions:

Having a 100 links from different IP's will be a lot better rather than having 1000's of links from the same IP.
However if you are getting links from your sub domains than i couldn't see any problem as it will be counted in internal linking, and there may not be any penalty for having such strong internal linking.
