Question Link Relevancy -

Hi,
I am looking at link relevancy for a new site.
Depending on who you listen to, the opinions vary widely as to what google classes as a relevant link.

I have been considering the following as highly relevant :
- anchor text matching a keykord on landing page.
- link from site in same link of business (eg , property).

How about...
- link from site in the same locality, ie, same address, country, state, town.?

Are non-relevant links a waste of time, or is there any such thing as a non-relevant link.?
What does google look at when determining degree of relevancy.?

Any advise appreciated.

These are all good to know and to have in mind. If you focus more on making unique content that is of value to users and let others know, you'll have more links than you know what to do with.

All links will help you. I've got some good experience to go to the TOP1 in chemistry with links from non-relevant web sites.

Be careful how you interpret this advice. Links from known link spam/farm sites will definitely NOT help you. But you are certainly allowed a percentage of links from untargeted sites, provided they are higher quality sites. But obviously the more relevant you can be, the better off your chances are for moving up in the rankings.

Re: Link Relevancy -

when I've said All links will help, I mean quality links from good sites (not exactly the same topic). No linkfarm of course.
I've use following strategy.
1. Use open dir. up to 5000 dirs.
2. Article submitting - about 1000 catalogs.
1 and 2 usually take me 2-4 weeks. Don't be rush.

Then if your site is new - you can enjoy with sandbox for up to 6 month
After sandbox I've repeat steps 1 and 2, but now quick.

3 What for 2 weeks - and see which keys are in TOP and which are not.
4 After this I either use my satellites for links, either consider to buy some links from third party websites.

How to buy links - its another difficult question.

Currently I don't deal with new sites and do not have such links. Usually when I've start to work with new one I go to different forums and collect new links. Here a small example
_http://www.seoms.net/ 1800 open dirs for 3$
and so on.

Re: Link Relevancy -

As far as unrelated links, its all relative to the engine, but the algos are too complex to know for sure what kind of link is considered completely irrelevant and unable to pass equity. a known link farm? yeah, probably. a newly scraped page on a spam site flying under the radar? Maybe not. That doesn't mean a webmaster/SEO should pursue low grade links - who has the time? - but it helps to field the question "Are non-relevant links a waste of time"... even though it doesn't provide a 'yes' or 'no' answer.
