Top 10 Twitter Trends of 2010

twitter_square.jpgAfter analyzing 25 billion tweets that have been sent so far this year, Twitter this morning revealed the top 10 overall trends, as well as trends in eight categories (news events, people, movies, television, technology, World Cup, sports, and hashtags). Google Android was a hot topic overall this year, while Google Instant was a top trending topic in Twitter’s technology category.

So what mattered most to the 175 million members of Twitterverse?

Overall Top 10 Twitter Trends

Most of the topics on this list were similar to the top queries revealed by Google, Yahoo, Bing, Ask, and AOL. The Gulf Oil Spill was the most tweeted about event for 2010. Here’s the full list:

  4. Haiti Earthquake
  5. Vuvuzela
  6. Apple iPad
  7. Google Android
  8. Justin Bieber
  9. Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows

Technology

Apple’s iOS and Android, which are considered the “most desired” mobile operating systems based on Nielsen research, owned the top four Twitter technology trends. The new Twitter and Google Instant also made it into the top 10:

  6. New Twitter

  10. Google Instant
