Scarry studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston before World War II – where he was in the army. After the war he eventually joined Little Golden Books and started his children’s books.

He has sold over 100 million copies of his books and they have been translated in to 30 languages, though his Doodle is only being shown in the United States.

Parents and children – and most people born since the 1980s know the name. His work has been made in to numerous television shows and videos and even computer games for young children.

The bow-tied worm also appeared in many other Richard Scarry books and also appears as the l in the mini-version of today’s Google Doodle at the top of the search results pages. It’s interesting that Google made this different image for the logo at the left – most doodles are just minimized when you see them at the left.
