Gulf Oil Spill Tracker Called 'Biggest Online Video of the Year'
At the OMMA Video event this week, MediaPost columnist Steve Smith called the Gulf Oil Spill Tracker created by PBS NewsHour the “biggest online video of the year.” He added, “”There is no better example of the power that online video has.”
What makes the Gulf Oil Spill Tracker so powerful is the embed code, which enables other sites — including Google Crises Response – Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill — to let their visitors watch BP’s live video stream of oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico. With each passing second, more gallons of crude oil and natural gas escape into the ocean. It is simultaneously tragic and hypnotic.
Thanks in part to congressional pressure, PBS NewsHour was able to let us watch the environmental crisis unfold in real time via the live video feed. The video takes the BP oil spill out of the abstract and into reality.
