Facebook Home Hits 500,000 Downloads, Getting Negative User Reviews
With 500,000 downloads in nine days, only about 0.05 percent of Facebook's user base is using the service. Facebook Home hasn't had great initial reviews on the Google Play store from the majority of users. The app has a lowly two star rating.
Despite mostly negative reviews from users, Facebook’s custom Android user interface Facebook Home has surpassed 500,000 downloads.
That’s according to information technology hack Benedict Evans, who posted the apparent milestone on Twitter.
According to Evans, Facebook Home passed 500,000 downloads from the Google Play store on Sunday, noting that the app had gone from the “100k-500k” downloads category to “500k-1m”. This can be seen over at Google Play, although Facebook is yet to announce the number of downloads.
While 500,000 downloads in nine days sounds like quite an acomplishment, one savvy tweeter pointed out that this means that only about 0.05 percent of Facebook’s user base is using the service.
However, that could be due to the fact that Facebook Home is available on only a handful of devices. These include the HTC One, HTC One X, Samsung Galaxy S3, Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and the Samsung Galaxy S4 once that is released this week.
The HTC First will be the first handset to come with Facebook Home out of the box, but that won’t be released until this summer.
The lack of supported devices aside, Facebook Home hasn’t had great initial reviews on the Google Play store. Of over 11,600 reviews logged by users of the new service, the overwhelmingly majority, 6,059, gave it a one-star review, and the average score from the total reviews is just 2.2 out of 5.
One user said, “I tried it, and to be honest, it just was too much. I would like it better if it was just the lock screen, but it gets annoying,” while another added, “There are some really neat features, but I feel like it’s too in your face.”
Users have also been complaining that Facebook Home drains their handsets’ batteries.
