numbering page tags uniquely

Anyone with the inside track on what is needed for separating tags by numbers, so they are indexed as unique:

.com/search-engines-newsletter.htm (one page)

.com/search-engines-newsletter2.htm (another 2nd page)
.com/search-engines-newsletter-2.htm (another 2nd page)

In other words, can this be done with the second example to keep tags less hyphenated and yet distinct? Can it continue to a third and fourth page in this manner?

Biggest Sports Event SEO Advice

Hi, I work for a big portal and we are building a huge Soccer World Cup section and I need your valuable advice.

We got a new CMS and the World Cup section is the first section using it.

It gets complicated because we have to launch the World Cup section soon and our "main soccer" section is not going to be ready until 3 months later and we want the World Cup to live under Soccer.

A good example of lost opportunity in terms of *long term user retention* was the Olympics because NBC created a new site - http://www.nbcolympics.com/ instead of creating a section within their Sports Channel (nbcsports.com) so we don't want to make the same mistake.

What would be the best approach in terms of SEO keeping in mind that the World Cup is going to launch sooner than the Soccer section?

1- What will happen if we redirect our current World Cup Soccer content to a folder within a sub domain where there is no content?
Example: futbol.mysite.com/world-cup (where the sub domain "futbol" is going to be empty until soccer is complete and the folder "world-cup" will be full of content.

2- What will happen if we create a sub domain for the World Cup to launch until our main soccer section is ready and then redirect the WC sub domain to the folder within soccer. Example
a) worldcup.mysite.com (december)
b) futbol.mysite.com (march)
c) futbol.mysite.com/world-cup (march) - Redirect worldcup.mysite.com to the "world cup" folder in march.

It make sense to you? I don't think there is any other option than these 2, how would you approach to this?

New Meta Tag for SEO?

I was wondering why the search engines have not yet introduced a new meta tag that targets negative keywords? If relevance is key, such a meta tag would stop your site from showing for totally irrelevant keywords e.g. the obvious example would be a negative keyword of "free" if your products cost something.

Any thoughts? Could this work or do SEO's just want to target absolutely everyone?

Watching G, and MSN, I see a very slow trend of G shying away from descriptive tags in existence. Although there are many, many repeat terms. What is the trend and what might be harmful? This is for a new site being launched.

--> What about repeat terms?
--> What about tags that omit or skip over a main url term, taking it/them out of order?

What is the best way to structure URLs?

I have read a lot of conflicting advice on this, so it would be interesting to hear what your views are. What is the best way to structure URLs for SEO purposes?

Some people say that pages should be close to the root of the domain. So we could have:

mysite.com/product-one-keywords.html
mysite.com/product-two-keywords.html

But others say that a logical URL directory structure should be used, such as:

mysite.com/category/sub-category/product-one-keywords.html
mysite.com/other-category/sub-category/product-two-keywords.html

I much prefer the look and organised structure of the second method, and the ability to get extra keywords into the full URL. But, does the fact that the product name keywords are then further from the root domain have a detrimental effect?

Has anyone scientifically tested these two approaches?
