As of this post.

http://textalyser.net Everyones favorite Keyword Density Analyzer is down.
for the last 3 days. Either the site's been hacked, or taken offline.
SEOQUAKE has on page density tools. But only for HTML pages. Many of the other tools don't even come close, if you wanted to type raw text, you're fresh out of luck.

I do not know how many SEO's & SEM's are affected out there, perhaps someone could find out. what happened to textalyser.net? If he's gone for good?

Wondering how salaries for inhouse SEMs stacked up compared to last year? Does more experience equal higher compensation? Who shot JR?

These questions and more to be answered when the survey data hits next week - watch your favorite SEO news source for coverage. :)

Better yet, use your SEMPO membership - members see the entire survey. Not a member yet, this is why you should join... for full access to survey data like this. ;)

Let's face it - most activities online are a waste of time...I limit my PC time during exam phase (lets not go into detail how I do that ;-)), and am actually kind of glad, I'm not wasting time googling unnecessary things, checking e-mails way too often, etc..

However, e-learning seems to be one of the activities online, that can be extremely useful (not a waste of time).

That just made me wonder - How big will this e-learning thing be in the future? What's your take?

numbering page tags uniquely

Anyone with the inside track on what is needed for separating tags by numbers, so they are indexed as unique:

.com/search-engines-newsletter.htm (one page)

.com/search-engines-newsletter2.htm (another 2nd page)
.com/search-engines-newsletter-2.htm (another 2nd page)

In other words, can this be done with the second example to keep tags less hyphenated and yet distinct? Can it continue to a third and fourth page in this manner?

Biggest Sports Event SEO Advice

Hi, I work for a big portal and we are building a huge Soccer World Cup section and I need your valuable advice.

We got a new CMS and the World Cup section is the first section using it.

It gets complicated because we have to launch the World Cup section soon and our "main soccer" section is not going to be ready until 3 months later and we want the World Cup to live under Soccer.

A good example of lost opportunity in terms of *long term user retention* was the Olympics because NBC created a new site - http://www.nbcolympics.com/ instead of creating a section within their Sports Channel (nbcsports.com) so we don't want to make the same mistake.

What would be the best approach in terms of SEO keeping in mind that the World Cup is going to launch sooner than the Soccer section?

1- What will happen if we redirect our current World Cup Soccer content to a folder within a sub domain where there is no content?
Example: futbol.mysite.com/world-cup (where the sub domain "futbol" is going to be empty until soccer is complete and the folder "world-cup" will be full of content.

2- What will happen if we create a sub domain for the World Cup to launch until our main soccer section is ready and then redirect the WC sub domain to the folder within soccer. Example
a) worldcup.mysite.com (december)
b) futbol.mysite.com (march)
c) futbol.mysite.com/world-cup (march) - Redirect worldcup.mysite.com to the "world cup" folder in march.

It make sense to you? I don't think there is any other option than these 2, how would you approach to this?

Opinions on Social Media Links From Prime Website?

Aloha All -

I'm getting ready to put the links from a client website to their different social media accounts. You click on the Twitter icon, you go to their twitter account, etc.

It looks like we're going to put them on every page - Twitter, FaceBook & YouTube. I might be getting too concerned about this, but thought I should run it by others who might have an angle on this. Here's my question:

Should I 'nofollow'those links AND if so, should I 'nofollow' them on every page or just the non-homepages, for example?

While there might be some benefit to feeding them link juice, I'm always hesitant to give that out without a really good reason.

Any opinions?

thanks for any help that can be offered

New Meta Tag for SEO?

I was wondering why the search engines have not yet introduced a new meta tag that targets negative keywords? If relevance is key, such a meta tag would stop your site from showing for totally irrelevant keywords e.g. the obvious example would be a negative keyword of "free" if your products cost something.

Any thoughts? Could this work or do SEO's just want to target absolutely everyone?

I think I know why Yahoo is failing

I have a paid inclusion for local search account with Yahoo as well as a regular PPC campaign with them. I do mostly adwords, but look at my work with Yahoo as a way to add a little bit to what I am doing.

With my PPC campaign, it was paused and I unpaused it a week ago only to check back today and see that in fact it was still paused. I again checked the unpause button, hit submit and still nothing.

With my local account, the credit card they were using was cancelled and they sent me a notice about it with an e-mail to reply to. I did that and never got a reply. I replied again and still nothing. I then filled out a form on their site asking for help with changing the primary card and never got a response.

So they lost my monthly local money and missed out on a week+ of PPC money from me.

I think I know why Yahoo is no longer relevant.

Why are google's search results so different from Bing, Yahoo etc?

Yes i know they're all different algorithms (although I thought Yahoo now used Googles search results?). But surely they are all striving for the the same thing so their results shouldn't be too different.

My business ranks number 1 or 2 for keywords which are qualified by my town e.g. <keyword> <town> in every search engine except google but shows no where in Google. Obviously from my perspective Google is wrong and teh others are right ;-)

I used to get similar results in Google but now my site is way down, like on page 10.

Why are Google's search results so different?

Do SEOs now have to choose between Google and the others when optimising?

Can anyone suggest why my website is about page 10 in google search for my companyname; loads of obscure directories are listed first.

Only searches for www.companyname.co.uk (yes companyname and domain are the same)find my listing.

I have started adding companyname to every page title to try to resolve.

Any thoughts on how to get my website listing above the directories that link to it?

Hi

There is a big problem going on with my business site's services page. here is the problem explained:

Since last few months my services page is not shown in the Google SERPs for its keywords, I am targeting. And yesterday I came to know that Google has crawled and indexed the duplicate page of my services page with the url http://www.XXXXX.com/services and which has been created by me (by mistake) on some forum while posting because the correct url of my services page is http://www.XXXXX.com/services.php and I missed .php in the url while posting on the forum.

Now both of these urls return the same page to the end user which Google has indexed and created a duplicity filter for my services page and not showing it in the search results

what is the solution to this problem. Please reply soon as it is hurting my business.

Waiting for your helpful responses,

Thanks in advance

Whois Privacy Programs Illegal

Not exactly, but recent court rulings support claims that if you falsify your whois information and use a privacy program you could be nailed.

A ruling by the US Court of Appeals 9th Circuit in the case of U.S. v Kilbride has determined that using whois privacy on domains can be considered “material falsification”. The case involved an appeal on criminal charges of spamming. The ruling in this case provides an the courts opinion on provisions of the CAN SPAM Act that specifically relate to the use of domains and were argued by the defense as “vague”.

In Title 18 § 1037 Section (d) (2). “Fraud and related activity in connection with electronic mail” it states that :

For purposes of paragraphs (3) and (4) of subsection (a), header information or registration information is materially falsified if it is altered or concealed in a manner that would impair the ability of a recipient of the message, an Internet access service processing the message on behalf of a recipient, a person alleging a violation of this section, or a law enforcement agency to identify, locate, or respond to a person who initiated the electronic mail message or to investigate the alleged violation.

The defendants in this case were convicted under 18 U.S.C. § 1037(a)(3) and (a)(4) and argued that the terms “impair”, “materially falsify” and “conceal” in that code are vague. The court however pointed out that ““When Congress does not define a term in a statute, we construe that term according to its ordinary, contemporary, common meaning.” The court made it clear in their ruling that the defendants use of private whois information was “materially falsified”.

“. . . private registration for the purpose of concealing the actual registrant’s identity would constitute “material falsification.

Defendants assert that many innocent people who privately register without the requisite intent may be subject to investigation for violation of § 1037 until their intent can be determined, allowing for abuse by enforcement authorities. This may be so, but it does not make the statute unconstitutionally vague.”

“It should have been clear to Defendants that intentionally falsifying the identity of the contact person and phone number for the actual registrant constitutes intentionally decreasing the ability of a recipient to locate and contact the actual registrant, regardless of whether a recipient may still be left some avenue to do so. We therefore conclude Defendants had notice that their conduct violated § 1037.”

The ruling doesn’t make use of whois privacy illegal. However coupling the use of privacy services with an allegation of intentional spamming and you’ve got the cards stacked against you.

What is the best way to structure URLs?

I have read a lot of conflicting advice on this, so it would be interesting to hear what your views are. What is the best way to structure URLs for SEO purposes?

Some people say that pages should be close to the root of the domain. So we could have:

mysite.com/product-one-keywords.html
mysite.com/product-two-keywords.html

But others say that a logical URL directory structure should be used, such as:

mysite.com/category/sub-category/product-one-keywords.html
mysite.com/other-category/sub-category/product-two-keywords.html

I much prefer the look and organised structure of the second method, and the ability to get extra keywords into the full URL. But, does the fact that the product name keywords are then further from the root domain have a detrimental effect?

Has anyone scientifically tested these two approaches?

Hi Guys,

Ive been working on a client's site and ive noticed that for one of the keyword were going for, we are in the top ten but seem to be hanging around 8th-10th place. I have also noticed that another page in the site is also ranking for the same keyword, and seems to be moving up at a fairly rapid rate (around page 6 as I write this). This page is what I would call 'a filler page' it's basically a page called 'meet the team'.

I have thought about putting this as noindex, however what happens to the link juice/pr this page has accrued. Will the be pumped back into the first page keyword?

Thanks guys for your input

Kind Regards

I'm not understanding this.
I placed an ad using Google's suggested bid (0.35) - my ad ran for couple hours then disappeared. Back at the control panel Google tells me I need to raise my bid to 0.45 to be on first page. So I do that - and my ad runs for another couple hours and then disappears. Back at the control panel Google now tells me I need to raise my bid to $1.00 to be on page one.

The confusing thing is that I'm targeting keywords with zero competition on the SERPs - that is, no other ads show up in Google search when I look for my keywords.

Have any ideas what's going on? There's no way I'll pay $1.00 per click for what I'm marketing - especially with no apparent competiton on the page.

Thanks
