I have read many articles about Internet Marketing and how website owners should advertising or market their business as if it wasn't just for the Search Engines and it makes sense. With reports of sites like Google changing the rules of indexing all the time your site could move from page one to page 30 in a hurry. New approaches to getting dependable traffic are no more just Search engines but linking to related topic websites, article writting, forums, press releases, email marketing, paid and others.

What other approches can be taken for internet marketing with out being a prisoner to just search engines.

Any ideas? :)

Anything you can do to get some sort of free publicity would be a great idea. Perhaps you can add a tool to your website that's useful, or maybe you give away a free PDF file with useful unique info.

Anything that would get people to link to your website would be a great start.

sootledir raises a good point - creating linkbait in the form of useful tools can do wonders for your site in terms of generating links to your site.

the best tools are created by people who have an intimate knowledge of their market or area of interest. so tools are good, but if you combine them with solid content and an opportunity for visitor feedback (blog comments, etc) or an actual forum, then you have a site that becomes more deeply embedded in a visitor's life. the social aspects of the web are very powerful juju.

once you have a site that deserves a user's bookmark or memorization of the URL, you've done a good job in managing your site's risk in terms of dependence on search engine traffic.

that said, nothing beats the firehose of traffic you get from sitting on the top of the page for a high-volume search term ;)

I really like the idea of giving away FREE pdf's and ebooks with link to your website. This form of marketing spreads around the internet fast. :)
