View Full Version : Let US Build the PERFECT Search Engine Together
This is the Perfect Forum to post this challenge
Most Search Engines / Directories / Meta Engines have both Relatively Weak and Strong and Mediocre Attributes....
Taking the Best form everything that is availble...
If you could construct the Perfect "Search Resource" - What would you take from each - combine - and add to your Ideal Engine
And - for the REALLY esoteric among us - what would be the ideal Relevancy Algorithms (SERPs) that would give the ideal results, in your opinions?
(It would be ironic if this TOPIC commenced producing a new power search engine :D )

On first search, I would split results down the screen between commercial and non-commercial results. This way if the user is search for Sony DVD Players they can get separate results if they are looking for just for info or if they are looking to purchase. At the top of each section would be a link that says "show commercial (or non-commercial results only" so they can get more results specifically for what they are looking for.

As a searcher I want (a) relevant results (b) fast results (c) no adverts (d) a clean interface, yet a powerful advanced search.
-> index needs to exeed Google/Yahoo.
-> the speed of most major search engines is OK

Defining the perfect search engine is a question of who to make it for. There are a good discussion going on today about vertical engines. In a vertical market you may have a very good change of making a search engine that is much better than what we have now but to compete with Google, MSN and Yahoo you need first of all a lot of spare time, along with a bunch of the best programmers - or, a pile of money :)
To me, the land of search is still so new that there are many ways you could improve search - vertically, regionally or globally - and it will come. "All" it takes is intelligent people having enough resources and enough good ideas.

Excerpts
The study found that that not only are 71% of business executives frustrated with consumer search engines, 74% are not even confident that the results are reliable. However, despite this lack of confidence, 67% stated it would be difficult or impossible to do their jobs without Web-based search tools.
67% of respondents search for financial information and reports
47% seek competitor information
28% spend between 6 to 10 hours per week researching online
45% encounter broken links that do not work
45% are slowed down by registration and/or passwords
39% felt that information found online is outdated
Apparently, despite the importance of online searches, consumer search engines actually hinder productivity.

Perhaps this was an ideal idea to Build the Perfect Search Engine
Or at least the "Linux" of Search - but what is happening???
Perhaps, Google and Linux the last of the "Un-Financed" Mavericks - with an idea - and an Open-Source Solution - that can evolve againts the Super-Rich, Powerful, and Politically Strong Established
of Today ( http://www.nutch.org/docs/en/donate.html )
