View Full Version : Minority- or Female-owned Search Engine?

I have a client who is actively looking to buy from media publishers (including search engines) that are either minority-owned or female-owned. Ownership could be considered a majority or plurality (plurality=less than 50% but the largest relative share).
This has been surprisingly difficult to find. Does anyone know of such a search engine?
Thanks,
Dave

For visible minorities, although I have not seen them mention it, the folks over at GenieKnows *might* qualify - you'd have to ask them, though. Also, at one point Ask.com might have qualified, but I don't know for sure. I was paying more attention to Genieknows' business model at the time, so I wasn't paying too much attention, honestly. I know they are from Canada, though! (which is MY bias ;) )

For women, at least half of the best SEO's I know are female, so that should be way easier to find.

Honestly though, in this industry, companies are more likely to be judged on technical skill and marketing savvy rather than race or gender, so while I'm pleased your client is interested in promoting social fairness, since it's not something that comes up very often in this industry (we tend to focus on marketing fairness), there isn't a lot of information available of ownership makeup broken down in that manner.

As a matter of fact, I think this is the first time I've ever been asked, and I've been doing this for years. Us virtual types learned to stop paying attention to looks and gender a long time ago, since avatars and names can be changed/faked so easily.

Around here, it usually only comes up when "booth babes" at conferences are mentioned... ;)

Cheers,

Ian

Ian,
Thanks for the input. I will check out GenieKnows.
Like you, I'm much more interested in performance than the demographic of ownership, but I have to admit it's an interesting challenge!

Dave,

SalesLookOut.ca is the most advanced geo-targeting shopping portal in the North American Market which represents the offline in-store advertising campaign. It was released in Edmonton, Montreal and Vancouver in Oct 2004 but has now opened nationwide across Canada with plans to debut in the US market....according to the Edmonton Journal. The President and CEO is Diana Clarke who was recently interviewed on CBC on her expertise on Geo-Shopping Portals. I have had the opportunity to speak with her, but I don't believe she would be interested in investors to represent majority shares.

My business partner (co-founder) of Wuraweb.com is a female, if that helps any.

http://www.wuraweb.com Is a site where service providers can list their services, and where visitors can find out their credentials, prices, features of their service and more.
