Being paronoid about getting wiped out by google we built many clones sites with different content which got the "similar pages" showing up for all our network. Google has them all damn it.

Over the past year the filters have evolved from 3 sites per on serp to now 2 and looking at the test data center we are getting down to one site per serp. In the good old days we could have 3 or 4 on G. Yahoo still easy to game, although they do hand edits if they catch you.

Now, all is not totally lost as I know from experience, due to the sheer amount of links we have, that if one sites disappears, usually one of the filtered sites takes its' place in the top spot. So still we have some benefit from all that link/content building.

The interesting part of all this is that our competiton also shows up as a "similar page" but is unfiltered and in the top 5 reults with us. My deduction from this must be that related but very disimilar content must be the key factor as our sites about the same thing but writen differently.

The debate would be. What criteria does one use to not contaminate yourself here with the "similar pages" filter?

What criteria does one use to not contaminate yourself here with the "similar pages" filter?Aside from avoiding near-duplicate content, there are probably commonalities in linking patterns being picked up on.

Thanks for being one of the reasons Google even needs dupe content filters, maxd.
