What are the SEO benefits of using a blog on a website? I am thinking about adding a blog service for my clients, but am not sure of the pros and cons of blogs in a business setting. Many of my clients are in the travel industry and software industry and thought it would be good for their visitors to read different blogs on vacation spots, different uses for software, etc.

Blogs provide fresh content which is search-engine friendly. It can also help you develop a reputation as an expert in a field.

when setting up a blog, what is better blog.domain.com or domain.com/blog? or both like here at SEW (they use blog.searchenginewatch.com/blog/)? What are the pros and cons of each? and why would you want to use both?

subdomain may make it easier for ad targeting and the like (although features are being added to most of the largest contextual programs to allow very granular advertising down to folder or page level)...and subdomains may make it easier to get certain links... but trust may not pass as well from domain to subdomain back and forth as well as it would from being put on a folder on a site.
the subdomain may also be easier to remember than the folders though.
