I wonder if there is any real value in exchanging links.

You give a link out and get a link in. What is the sum of this...?

Dennis I always preferred a Threesome...

you have 2 sites

A) real site
B) high Pr link pimp site

then send emails like these :

Dear Webmaster,

Are you interested in quality link exchange (3way Link Exchange)? We will place your website (domain name) link on PR6 page on our High Pr link pimp site (PR7)

In return we appreciate Link Back from you. So it’s my humble request that you put a link back to real site using the information below on PR2 or higher page and reply us with location of our link and with your linking information.

OUR Link Info.
keyword you want :)

Link Code:-

the href and stuff like that

This exchange will create one way links to both our sites, which is beneficial from SEO point of view. This link will remain active as long as the requested link back is active on your site.

Regards

Dennis D,

Remember those things called website vistors...

real value in exchanging links.
... is that you will be providing your website visitor with information that is valuable to them.

As a website visitor, would you rather visit a site that has links related to your needs or one with links that are unrelated to your needs?

Example: This forum has a high PR value, but would you visit it if it started to have links to unrelated information??? (Because they either sold and/or exchanged links simply for PR value?)

I usually find 3-way link exchanges offer a gimp link in a weak PR spam site in exchange for you linking to their already highish PR mid-level brand client. ;)

Dennis, it's not the case that 1 link out and 1 link in cancel each other out. There is some value from link exchanges, but it's just generally considered that one way links are better.

And some link exchanges can offer reasonable traffic levels, particularly for new sites just starting out. I've had a link / banner / article exchange going with a site for about 3 years now and it still appears in top 20 monthly referrers.
