I heard Today on radio that Yahoo provided information of a Chinese dissident to Chinese authority. He was subsequently sent Gulag. If this is true, we all better think about using Yahoo at all. It's quite scary!

http://blog.searchenginewatch.com/blog/050909-120137 on our SEW Blog has some details and links. Yes, they apparently handed over some email details. Yahoo isn't confirming it other than to say they have to comply with the laws of various countries. Even in the US, there are reasons any email provider might have to hand over your details. But some say Yahoo may have gone beyond what the law required in China.

Privacy issues are a concern, but in the world of online business/communication its up to the individual to do everything they can to protect themselves.

I'm not saying companies like Google and Yahoo have no responsibility to protect their users, they do. However, The HOA regulations in our neighborhood alone is hell, can you imagine trying to comply with every law and bi-law made around the world?

Let Katrina be an example. Don't rely 100% on the powers that be to protect you, you must take on SOME responsibility yourself.

When it comes to using the Internet I trust other only with what I can afford to lose.
