Hi,
I have a question which has 2 parts to it that relate to how different Search Engines deal with urls that pass multiple parameters.
I have a client who has a CMS generated Site Map, each link off the site map generates a dynamic page with a url with over 8 parameters (eg. ?id=6&cname=25&1nID=93&2nID=97&3nID=97&4nID=97&pID=97&nID=104). I have stated to them that this will hinder their SEO efforts as I believed Google could get through only 3-4 and that was about it (I took this view from attending the London SES conference this year).
However, the client has given me an example where Google is spidering multiple parameters. If for example I do a search for the term 'eircom broadband' in Google.com it shows the 2nd result 'Broadband introduction residential' with a url of:
http://www.eircom.ie/cgi-bin/bvsm/bveircom/bladerunner/showContent.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0504579210.109093 6845@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccchadcmdlmkehhcefeceiedffndffj.0&cid=BroadbandIntroRes&site=Res&chanId=-536883873
This is passing through 5 parameters (1 of which is a session ID which I thought was a no-no) and is listed well, so my first question would be has Google's spidering of multiple parameters much improved over the last couple of months?
The second question I have is on the same point, and that is if I do the same search in Yahoo it shows the same result 'Broadband introduction residential' at number 2 with the URL:
www.eircom.ie/broadband
However, this url is a 301 redirect to the url listed in Google, but it lists information found in the google url as the result description which would indicate to me that Yahoo can pick up info from dynamic pages with multiple parameters. (I hope that's clear  )
I'm trying to get a better understanding of this so I can go back to the client and say either:
1. yes you can run the site map with a large number of parameters.
2. yes you can only if you put a permanent redirect against it.
3. no you can't and this example is unique?
I would just like to gain some clarification on multiple parameters, I have a number of clients coming on board with these types of sites and want to make sure I really understand the situation.
Thanks
Damien
