There's the Google specific forum, but I haven't found one really suitable for discussing all the different options... Any recommendations?

I uninstalled MSN, because after saying "NO" to to their extensions (IE toolbar, etc.) when I first installed it, I noticed that the automatic update process went and installed the extensions without my permission (IE toolbar, tabbed browser beta, etc.)., which ticked me off.

I uninstalled Google because it didn't support shared network drives to my satisfaction, in a small office setting (where other people may be the ones to update a file on the shared network drive)..

And I was finding myself nicely happy with Copernic, until I noticed one of my Word documents, in plain sight, not on the network, no password, nothing unusual about it, simply not getting indexed.

But anyway, just thought I'd ask... I view searchenginewatch.com as the first place to go for information, and it seems like this should/could/would be the best place for a desktop search forum to exist.. (hint hint)

We do have a Search Toolbars & Utilities area where I've moved this thread to. We haven't had enough discussion of desktop search alone so far to warrant an entire forum for it, but if that rises, it's something we'd consider. Until then, this is probably the best place for it.

Try the Lookout software from Microsoft. It's basically an Outlook plugin, but I've had great success using it across our small office network. It seems to do a superb indexing job and the search is lightning-fast.

I am bumping this thread up from long ago, as I have the same question.

X1 looked like a great solution, but it would not index my Eudora email (June/July 07). I switched to Copernica, and it worked ok, but slowly, and it never finished a complete index of my 80 Gb hard drive (~50 Gb used). Neither company provides a forum for users to help one another. Nor do they respond to individuals; though, a forum would alleviate that frustration.

Is there enough interest here for a desktop search forum?

I'm game but also curious, have you tried Google Desktop Search?

No, I have not. My reasons are that X1 and Copernic were supposed to be highly regarded (X1 moreso), and it seems that my personal desktop search should be done on my desktop and not on a web server. Further to this second point, six months ago I was reading that Google assumed it was normal and reasonable to redo the entire index when prompted, but they don't have a way to index during idle time. That way, working on your computer changes the file landscape to be progressively out of synch, and Google wants to waste time re-indexing old files that do not need it. ???

I suspect this thread merits further posts, but I will probably also start a new thread to address some specific problems with Copernic.
