I posted this on my blog, hispanictips.com (http://hispanictips.com/2005/07/27/comparison-of-the-number-of-searches-done-in-june-2005-at-yahoo-using-term-hispanic-and-latino/) , but haven't gotten much response and I would like to know what others think, especially in terms of optimizing my site and using google adwords

I compared the terms ‘hispanic’ and ‘latino’ using the keyword tool at (Yahoo (http://searchmarketing.yahoo.com/srch/srch_ks.php) )

I was quick to note that there are definite differences both in types of search terms and the number of searches.

Quick Conclusions (these are just my 5 minute observations)

Hispanic search numbers drop much quicker after the first two terms than the number of latino searches
-I haven't totalled the number of searches so I can’t compare that way
-These numbers would be interesting to see on a graph

I don’t know exactly how to say this, but the search terms with ‘hispanic’ seems to have more professional (for lack of a better word) associated terms. What I mean is can be seen here:
-4221 hispanic scholarship vs. 959 latino scholarship
-5005 latino girl vs. 2673 hispanic girl
-2561 hispanic culture vs. 892 latino culture
-There are no ‘latino’ searches with church, history, national, food etc. (of course there could be those searches above the 100 count)

I have to admit there are many more ‘latino’ terms with porn associations than ‘hispanic’

Please could someone take a look at the numbers and let me know:
1. What are your impression and conclusions?
2. What are the implications here?

Here is the post with the data table, anyone have opinions they would like to share, thanks

Tomas

Hispanic is the profesional word, Officialy used in goverment and companies.
Latino is a word more used with "common talk".

Irrelevant of search numbers if you are aiming for profesionals, highly educated people, or targetting the non-latino segment use the word Hispanic.

If you are targetting other people, entertaiment related segment, etc go with latino.

It might change a bit if your targetting a country other than the US.

There are no ‘latino’ searches with church, history, national, food etc. (of course there could be those searches above the 100 count)

If a non hispanic searches for these he would probably use hispanic, of a hispanic searches for this he's probably searching in spanish.
