To be frank with you, I am a new user of Computer, especially in Internet. I tried my level best to find out the website that I need by putting in the search box of Google. But i am sorry to say that all in vain. So, I am very much vexed and I would like to buy a Comprehensive World Website Directory or Yellow pages. Can you recommend me a good one by your experince.

My friends say that no waste money on buying this one. Because it is possible to know the Website by subject-wise or fieldwise,etc.,. But I am still helpless.

Your opinion,please.

Directories can be useful, but they are not as good at monetizing traffic and are not as scalable as search engines are.

Danny recently made a few blog posts about the fall of directories.

Yahoo Directory Makes Changes & Further Directory Decline (http://blog.searchenginewatch.com/blog/050308-101342)

for the last year or so many junky general directories have done well because people were just buying the link popularity, but some of the search algorithms might be advancing quickly to decrease the value of many of those links.

ROFL.... Talk about different frames of reference. Aaron, I think kumar is talking about buying a printed directory of best sites on the Web, or a printed Web Yellow pages, because he can't find anything via search... not in investing in a directory.

Hi kumar... welcome. Printed directories aren't very useful, because they are generally out of date, can't possibly be complete, you can't click on them, and you can't search in them.

There's a fairly good section in Google Help on the "Essentials of Google Search"...
http://www.google.com/help/basics.html

Also, on the left side menu of this forum, there's a link to "Web Searching Tips" which you might try....
http://searchenginewatch.com/facts/
This is a good section once you have the basics down. I'm not sure it's basic enough to start you.

I just did some looking, and I can't find a very basic article, in simple English, about how to search and the web. Maybe someone else knows of a good resource.

PS - Until a good article is recommended, let me suggest this approach...

Start your search with one word.

If you can't find what you're looking for, add another word. Generally you need two or three words, or even four or more words in the search box, to find what you're looking for.

As you add words, if your results get better, you're on the right track. If they get worse, maybe you need to try different words. As long as your results get better, you can add additional words to your search. Look at the Google Help article for suggestions on how to refine your search.

Be prepared to look two or three pages in the search results to find what you want.

Also, check the Google spelling suggestions just above your search results. Hope this helps.

right, <making crap up here> and since their biz models do not scale as well they usually do not have the same level of quality or usefulness, since their owners can't invest as much in them as search engines can :D

You might also want to try the Google Personal Search (http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2005/06/search-gets-personal.html) and share your experiences with us lateron.

As it states on Googleblog, you won't see any major differences at first, but as time goes by, the search results will more and more adjust to your overall needs.
