I have yet to come accross any white papers or documentation about a discussion of the length of the backlink anchor text.

Does Google apply a density filter to backlinks?

Or does it just use a keyword matching filter to find selective keywords in the backlink and just utilizes a Proximity filter?

I do not think they are going to release a whitepaper which says this is how to game us with links, but it is well known that you should mix your link text.

it is usually best to use many different short variations of link text instead of repeating one long one over and over again.

Thanks for the reply SEOBOOK. I might have stated the questions a little vaguely.

Since SE's look for matching keyword combinations in anchor text would it be wise to have a long varying anchors instead of just short two/three word anchors? This way, the SE's would get more matches. Taking varying anchors out of the equation.

For example: What is better?
10 keyword anchors (different keywords)
3 keyword anchors (different keywords

do you mean only using 3 variations or using 10 different variations?

I think more is usually better... at least up to a point.

you need the anchor text concentrated enough to where you really target some of the terms and ideas, but for those who build large link building campaigns sometimes people even use www.example.com or "click here" as the anchor text, or other random things to try to make it look natural.

it all depends on how competitive your field is and what scale you are building links to
